SMH has officially opened as a Milk Depot in association with the Mother’s Milk Bank of Florida, in an effort to make it easier for our community moms to donate their breast milk.
A mother’s own breast milk is always the best food choice for her newborn, but when mom’s milk isn’t available, breast milk donated by thoroughly screened donors is the next best option for our most fragile, sick and premature babies in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.
The Milk Banks screens mothers similar to the screening process done for blood donations. They analyze the donated milk of approved donors for fat, protein and lactose content, and pasteurize the milk to kill any viruses or bacteria while keeping the milk's nutritional value. They then test the milk to be sure it’s free of contaminates before deep freezing and distributing to Neonatal units. Babies across the country get the lifesaving nourishment of donor milk.
Mommies, who are interested in sharing their extra milk to help sick babies survive, can start the screening process by calling the Mothers’ Milk Bank of Florida at (407) 248-5050 or go online to milkbankofflorida.org. Then bring your frozen milk to SMH and we will ensure your milk is delivered safely to the Milk Bank. Park your car in the Mother-Baby discharge area and drop off your frozen milk at the nearby HealthConnection space on the first floor.
Open 7am – 6pm Monday – Friday, and on weekends 10am – 4pm.
