Orthopedic Surgery Support & Education

Sarasota Memorial offers pre-surgery education for patients undergoing spine surgery or joint surgery. The pre-operative classes explain what to expect before, during and after surgery.

Joint Replacement Surgery

Once you have made the decision to have surgery, you will need to complete the checklist for "Preparing tor Joint Replacement Surgery" click here.

Pre-Operative Joint Replacement Education (for hip, knee or shoulder surgery) is required prior to surgery. Topics in this education class include pain after surgery, what to expect during your stay, your goals after surgery and finally, your discharge plan.

  1. Live Class - Mondays, 9am at Clark Road Health Care Center
    5880 Rand Blvd., Sarasota, FL 34239
    Enter through the front glass doors, proceed to elevator hallway, pass elevators and turn right, classroom doors are on the right.
  2. Live Class - Wednesdays, 9am at Sarasota Memorial Hospital
    1700 S. Tamiami Trail, Sarasota, FL 34239
    From the main entrance, take the "C" Elevator to the 2nd floor, and turn right off the elevator. 
  3. Online Class Video
    Materials can be printed here to follow along with the video. Once you complete the online course registration link, you will be directed to the video and confirmed for participation. 

Family and friends are welcome to attend the class; no reservations are required. Classes are not held on major holidays (Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Christmas Day, and New Years' Day).

Spine Surgery

Spine Education Classes provide informative pre-operative and post-operative spinal education in an interactive setting. Topics include nursing care, equipment involved, pain management, rehab therapy, recovery exercises and inpatient and outpatient rehab options. 

A live class is offered on Thursdays at 9am at the main campus (community classroom, second floor, near C elevators). Family and friends are welcome to attend the class; no reservations are required. Classes are not held on major holidays (Independence Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas Day, and New Years' Day).
