Thoracic Surgery Services
Sarasota Memorial’s Thoracic Surgery team treats noncancerous (benign) and cancerous (malignant) disorders of the chest cavity area, including the trachea, lungs, esophagus, mediastinum (area between lungs where heart is located), diaphragm and chest wall (rib cage).
Conditions that affect the body’s thoracic region can be very complex, and often require multi-disciplinary care from a team of specialists. Our thoracic surgeons work with care teams across the health system to provide exceptional treatment, minimally invasive interventions and leading-edge surgical solutions for lung, heart, vascular and esophageal diseases.

Thoracic Surgery Team
At SMH, we believe that collaboration is the key for delivering the very best comprehensive care and treatment for our patients.
To that end, our thoracic surgery team works closely with medical and radiation oncologists, pulmonologists, and many other specialists and supportive care clinicians to provide exceptional, customized care. Our thoracic surgeons also are active participants of SMH’s Lung Cancer Review Board, a team of cancer specialists who meet weekly to review patient cases and work together to determine the best treatment strategies.
Director of Thoracic Surgical Oncology Paul Chomiak, MD, provides specialized treatment to patients with lung cancer and other thoracic disease. His expertise includes robot-assisted surgery and minimally invasive techniques, as well as interventional bronchoscopy — robotic bronchoscopy, endobronchial ultrasound and endobronchial laser ablation — for improved diagnostic and surgical techniques.
Cardiovascular-thoracic surgeon Paul Vesco, MD, specializes in minimally invasive and robot-assisted thoracic surgery for benign or cancerous conditions of the lung, chest and esophagus. Among the handful of cardiothoracic surgeons who pioneered robot-assisted technologies, Dr. Vesco’s skills further strengthen and diversify the range of robotic and minimally invasive thoracic and esophageal surgical options available to our patients.
