We encourage loved ones to connect through video-chat apps such as Skype and FaceTime or via phone, email or text; staff can provide assistance in helping make these connections.
Sarasota Memorial Hospital’s brand-new, $50-million Rehabilitation Pavilion comprises 74,000 square feet of space dedicated to helping patients regain their independence following strokes, brain tumors, brain injuries, broken bones, spinal fractures, amputation, surgery and trauma-related injuries. The only facility of its kind in Sarasota County, the Rehabilitation Pavilion hosts inpatient and outpatient guests, offering a comprehensive slate of rehab services and therapies under one roof.
Roughly 25 percent of SMH’s rehab patients have suffered strokes or some other neurological injury. Many cannot walk, talk, bathe, feed or dress themselves. With these challenges in mind, Sarasota Memorial designed and built the Rehabilitation Pavilion to accommodate patients who use mobility aids like wheelchairs and to give all patients access to the resources they need to rebuild their physical ability and confidence as they heal physically and emotionally and become self-sufficient again. All of the pavilion’s acute-care, inpatient rooms are private and feature innovative design elements and the latest therapy tools.
Both inpatient and outpatient guests benefit from the Rehabilitation Pavilion’s unique design components, including an outdoor mobility garden; restaurant-style dining rooms; and interactive models of apartments, residential-style kitchens, a mobile home and a car, which allow patients to practice independent living. The pavilion also has several gyms with fall prevention and neuro-stimulation technology that promotes strength, balance and recovery.
Sarasota Memorial’s Rehabilitation Pavilion, the only local option for hospital-based inpatient services, is staffed with leading rehabilitation experts and carries the highest level of accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF), as well as an additional certification as a stroke specialty provider. Rehabilitation Pavilion Highlights
Private Inpatient Rooms: The new rehab center features 54 totally private, inpatient rooms housed on two floors. For patients who need continued physician or nursing supervision, SMH’s acute-care inpatient program offers guests complete medical care and emergency services at a fully accredited facility.
Outpatient Therapy: The outpatient rehabilitation center provides a comprehensive array of treatments for everything from ankle sprains to traumatic injuries. Certified physical, occupational and speech-language therapists treat patients recovering from strokes and other neurological disabilities, joint replacement, spinal conditions and sports injuries.
Outdoor Mobility Garden: A fall prevention and therapy tool, the mobility garden offers patients a real-world practice field for navigating varying types of terrains—whether walking or in a wheelchair—up inclines, down ramps and around obstacles. They also can practice retrieving items from a mailbox, spraying a garden hose, navigating a wet surface and trying their hand at the putting green.
Leading-edge Therapy Technologies: The Rehab Pavilion features state-of-the-art gymnasiums and therapy areas, as well as the latest therapeutic technologies and programs, including Bioness, Ekso, Lee Silverman Voice Therapy (LSVT) Loud, LSVT Big and videostroboscopy.
Real-world Readiness: Each patient floor includes an apartment designed to help patients learn how to maneuver in a home environment, allowing them to practice getting in and out of a regular bed or shower/tub, using kitchen equipment and navigating around furniture.
Easy Access: The Rehabilitation Pavilion has a dedicated, covered parking area and a dedicated entrance / dropoff area.
Rehab Pavilion Programs and Services
At Sarasota Memorial, patient treatment plans are customized to meet an individual’s goals and needs. To that end, we offer a number of specialized rehab programs to help people overcome the challenges and disabilities caused by an illness or injury.
Comprehensive Stroke Rehabilitation: An integral part of the Neuroscience Center of Excellence, Sarasota Memorial has been nationally certified and designated by the state as the preferred provider of medical care to local stroke patients in Sarasota County. The Joint Commission has given the program its “Gold Seal of Approval,” which means we have the specialized knowledge, skills and technology in place to provide people with the best possible stroke care in our community.
Neurological Rehabilitation: Our multidisciplinary outpatient neurological rehab programs work with people recovering from stroke, spinal cord injury, or brain injury, and those managing neurologic conditions and disorders, including MS, ALS, and Parkinson Disease. Customized treatment plans may include physical, occupational, speech therapy and other specialized services designed to help each patient meet individual goals.
Oncology Rehabilitation for Cancer Survivors: Comprehensive, custom cancer rehabilitation treatments help survivors physically and emotionally heal from the side effects of chemotherapy, radiation, surgery or other cancer therapy, with comprehensive, custom rehabilitation treatments designed to manage pain, weakness, cognitive impairment or other issues that follow cancer treatment. The program focuses on improving not only symptoms, but also personal wellness and quality of life through nutrition, exercise, relaxation and educational services.
Spinal Cord Injury Specialist: Sarasota Memorial Medical Director of Rehabilitation Services Dr. Samuel Grissom is the only doctor in southwest Florida who is board-certified in Spinal Cord Injury Medicine by the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. He oversees a full spectrum of services to meet the complex medical, rehabilitation and mobility needs of people recovering from brain and spinal cord injuries, stroke and neurological disorders, and orthopedic and musculoskeletal conditions.
Orthopedic Rehabilitation: Rehabilitation from a sports injury or reconstructive surgery is different for every patient. Age, physical condition and lifestyle all factor into the recovery program. Sarasota Memorial’s skilled physical and occupational therapists work with each patient to develop a care plan that might include specialized therapies and exercises, customized equipment or orthotics, and pain management.
Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation: Outpatient cardiac rehabilitation is a comprehensive program that includes carefully prescribed exercise, education and counseling to help patients recognize and modify risk factors. Our pulmonary rehabilitation program includes similar components of monitored exercise, education and support with the goal of stabilizing symptoms of their asthma, emphysema, cystic fibrosis, chronic bronchitis or other condition.
Pet Therapy: For more than 15 years, Sarasota Memorial’s pet therapy program has helped patients in our inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation program, as well as our pediatric and cancer patients, and nursing-home residents. Research has shown that pet therapy can produce physiological and psychological benefits, including reduced blood pressure and stress, as well as help promote a positive outlook on life, better outcomes in the healing and rehabilitation process and improved socialization skills.
