We offer a 3-year categorical Internal Medicine Residency Training Program, with 13 residents per year and total complement of 39 at full capacity.
Our program was carefully designed to meet the requirements specified by the ACGME, prepare residents for careers in primary care, general internal medicine and subspecialty training and serve a diverse socio-economic demographic patient population, including urban, suburban, elderly, underserved and underinsured.
During their three years of training, residents have the opportunity to rotate through all of the disciplines in general internal medicine under the supervision of top-notch physicians, researchers and medical educators, and participate in the care of patients in community clinics, nursing homes and private subspecialist practices.

The Sarasota Memorial pharmacy residency program was established in 1999. The PGY1 residency program offers a unique “real-life” experience in the second largest community hospital in Florida. A wide array of rotations and experiences are available for our residents. Our preceptors are a highly trained group, comprised of pharmacy specialists and unit-based pharmacists with many years of experience. At SMH, the PGY1 residency training is individualized for each resident. Our goal is to prepare you for the next step in your career, which may include the pursuit of a PGY2 residency or a position as a unit-based pharmacist in a community hospital.
The PGY2 Emergency Medicine Pharmacy Residency will transition PGY1 graduates from general to specialized practice by preparing residents to be fully integrated members of the interdisciplinary emergency medicine team and to deliver comprehensive and integrated medication therapy management services. Graduates of the residency will possess the skills and competencies required to qualify them for clinical pharmacy specialists or academic faculty positions.

The Administrative Fellowship at Sarasota Memorial Health Care System (SMHCS) is a two-year practical learning experience that emphasizes exposure to decision-making at the corporate, executive, and managerial levels. The Administrative Chief of Staff serves as the formal preceptor for the administrative fellow; however, all members of the executive team provide mentorship throughout the program. In the first year, the administrative fellow will participate in rotations throughout the healthcare system to gain a firm understanding of hospital and system operational dynamics. The second year is spent managing projects that fulfill both the administrative fellow’s interests and the organization’s needs. The second year will also include mentoring the incoming first year administrative fellow.
SMHCS is a not-for-profit system consisting of an 897-bed public hospital in Sarasota, FL, a 178-bed hospital in Venice, FL, an 82-bed behavioral health facility, an integrated network of outpatient facilities located throughout Sarasota County, as well as a physician enterprise. With over 10,000 staff, SMHCS is the county’s largest employer. SMHCS will continue to expand with the construction of a 7-story outpatient Cancer Pavilion and the Kolschowsky Research and Education Institute, both slated to open in 2025.
