SMH Expands Staff Masking Policy, Reports 2 New COVID-19 Deaths

As the COVID-19 health crisis continues to escalate, Sarasota Memorial is expanding its masking policy for all staff and providers who work in clinical areas or who come into contact with patients in public or other areas of the hospital. The expanded masking policy was announced as cases of positive patients continue to rise. Two more positive patients died at SMH since yesterday’s update.

Effective 6 p.m. March 20, Sarasota Memorial will activate a “No Visitors” policy, restricting all visitors except in special circumstances. The temporary change is part of the health system’s ongoing effort to help slow the spread of COVID-19 and safeguard the health of patients, families, staff and the community.

Together with Breast Oncology Program Director and surgeon Russell Novak, MD, they provide comprehensive surgical treatment for patients with breast cancer.

A Sarasota Memorial patient tested presumptively positive for COVID-19. The patient is a 70-year-old man who was admitted March 10 and placed in isolation under the care of staff trained in appropriate infection prevention and control measures.
