5 Habits for Health and Happiness

In collaboration with SMH Oncology Clinical Counselor Elizabeth Bornstein

Our happiness is in our own hands. But how can we ensure that we are maximizing the portion we can control? At the core of our joy and well-being is self-care. SMH Oncology Clinical Counselor Elizabeth Bornstein, MSSA, LCSW, OSW-C, APHSW-C recommends five habits to prioritize this self-care and cultivate health and happiness for all ages.

Find an “Accountabilibuddy”

Incorporating these habits into a routine is even better when done with company! Try working out with a friend—combining social connection and exercise—or creating a shared playlist, which can help cultivate calm!

  • Basic Needs
If our well-being falls short, it can be difficult to feel happy. Prioritize exercise, sleep, eating healthy and drinking enough water. Make it a habit to get the recommended 7-9 hours of sleep per night, 30 minutes of exercise 5 times a week, and daily portion of fruits and veggies. These three practices can stimulate our “happy hormones,” such as dopamine and serotonin.

  • Cultivating Calm
Whether it is watching a movie, playing with a pet, listening to music or meditation, find what brings you joy and incorporate it into your routine. Studies even show that laughter can relieve tension and boost mood!

  • Connection
Social connection plays an integral role in our happiness. Even if it is as simple as a phone call or sharing a meal with friends, being surrounded by others can make us happier.

  • Acts of Kindness
Acts of kindness strengthen social connections and boost self-esteem! This habit benefits both sides involved, a nice reminder that we must be kind to ourselves as well as to others!

  • Gratitude
Gratitude can take many forms and is linked to greater emotional well-being, improved sleep quality, and increased motivation. And feel free to start small, simply pausing for a moment and taking in your surroundings can improve your mindset.

Getting Started with Gratitude

Here are some questions to ask yourself when practicing gratitude…

  1. What is something you are proud of?
  2. Who makes you smile?
  3. What happened today that was good?
