Sleep Apnea is a common but potentially serious condition in which breathing repeatedly stops or becomes shallow during sleep. Obstructive sleep apnea, caused by collapse or blockage of the airway, is the most frequently diagnosed type.

At the Sleep Disorder Center, we diagnose sleep apnea through a detailed clinical assessment and sleep study that monitors your breathing, oxygen levels, heart rhythm, brain activity, and other physiologic signals throughout the night. Your healthcare provider will determine whether an in-lab sleep study or an at-home test is most appropriate for you.

Sleep Studies at the Sleep Disorder Center: A private, comfortable bedroom is provided for each patient at our accredited sleep medicine facility. A specially trained sleep technologist will apply sensors that record breathing patterns, oxygen levels, brain waves, heart rhythm, and leg movements while you sleep. After your study is completed, your results will be interpreted by one of our board-certified physicians, who will discuss next steps and treatment options with you.

Sleep Apnea Treatment Options: Positive Airway Pressure (PAP) Therapy is the first line of treatment for obstructive sleep apnea and can prevent or reverse many of its complications. Several types of PAP devices are available, including CPAP, BIPAP, and Auto titrating PAP. Your physician will help determine the best fit for your needs.

For patients who cannot tolerate PAP or who require alternative therapy, additional options may include:

  • Oral appliance therapy
  • Hypoglossal nerve stimulation (Inspire implant)
  • Positional therapy and behavioral interventions
  • Weight management strategies when appropriate
  • Surgical evaluation for select anatomical causes of airway obstruction
