Medically Dependent? Register Now for a Storm Shelter

Medically Dependent? Register Now for a Storm Shelter

Hurricane season is June 1 through Nov. 30. That means NOW is the time to make sure your home, family and pets will be safe in a tropical storm or hurricane.

If you or a loved one will need special medical care at a shelter in the event of a hurricane, you must pre-register for assistance before a hurricane by calling Sarasota County’s Call Center at 941-861-5000 or filling out the county's Medical Needs Application form online. Click here for more information on pre-registering.

Sarasota Memorial Hospital is a designated medical shelter for patients and other medically dependent Sarasota County residents who require a hospital setting during emergency situations and who are assigned to the hospital by the county. For people with special medical needs (Medically Dependent People, or MDPs) that do not require a hospital setting for care, there are other designated shelter facilities in the county.

Note that the county stops accepting online MDP applications 60 hours prior to expected impact of storm.

Should a storm strike become imminent, the county will contact those who have pre-registered for transport to the appropriate shelter. For more information, visit the Sarasota County website.

Note that MDPs and caregivers assigned to Sarasota Memorial Hospital will be required to wear face masks inside the hospital, in accordance with SMH's universal masking policy. Click here for information on what assigned MDPs and caregivers can expect when sheltering at SMH, including current COVID-19 precautions.

Sarasota County has supply lists and other important disaster preparation tips for residents click here. All households should have an all-hazards kit with items such as a 3-day supply of medications, cash, contact numbers, face masks, important papers, etc. It's wise to have a kit for your car as well, with blankets, rain gear, jumper cables and other emergency supplies. And don't forget to make plans and a kit for your pets!
