SMH First Physicians Group Adds 2 New Specialists

SARASOTA, Fla. – Sarasota Memorial Health Care System welcomed two new specialists, an endocrinologist and a physical medicine and rehabilitation physician, to its First Physicians Group (FPG) network

Manivel K. Eswaran, MD

Manivel K. Eswaran, MD, joined First Physicians Group Endocrinology, where he treats patients alongside Dr. Joseph Rand, at the practice’s Waldemere Medical Plaza location. Dual board-certified in Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism, and Internal Medicine, Dr. Eswaran brings extensive experience and specialized training in the treatment of diabetes and metabolic disease, thyroid masses and disorders, parathyroid dysfunction and bone health, pituitary tumors and disease, adrenal disorders and gonadal dysfunction.

Dr. Eswaran joined Sarasota Memorial’s FPG network in April from Accent Physician Specialists in Gainesville, Fla., where he also served as assistant professor at the University of Central Florida North Florida Regional Medical Centre. Prior to that, Dr. Eswaran worked as an endocrinologist with Steward Medical Group in Warren, Ohio, and Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, Penn. 

Dr. Eswaran earned his medical degree in 2000 at Sri Ramachandra Medical College and Research Institute in India, and completed his residency at Guthrie Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre, Pa. He completed his endocrinology fellowship at the University of Texas Medical Branch, in Galveston, Tex. Bruce E. Sicilia, MD

Bruce E. Sicilia, MD, FAAPMR, joined First Physicians Group Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, where he treats patients alongside Drs. Alexander Bajorek, Anthony Cavalli and Neenu Cherian. Board-certified in physical rehabilitation and pain medicine, Dr. Sicilia specializes in stroke rehabilitation, spasticity treatment (including Botox injections), myofascial pain (including trigger point injections) and medical acupuncture. He also provides general inpatient rehabilitation care and patient-centered plans for those recovering from brain and spinal cord injuries, stroke and other neurological, orthopedic and musculoskeletal conditions.

Dr. Sicilia came to Sarasota Memorial’s FPG network in April from Encompass Health Inpatient Rehabilitation Hospital of York, Penn., where he served as medical director. Dr. Sicilia also worked as an associate physician at Greenspring Valley Medical Associates in Owings Mills, Md., and assistant professor in physical rehabilitation and pain management at George Washington University Hospital in Washington D.C. He earned his medical degree in 1988 from Medical College of Pennsylvania. He completed his residency at George Washington University Hospital. Dr. Sicilia’s practice, First Physicians Group Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, is located at 1700 South Tamiami Trail. 

Sarasota Memorial recruited both physician to the area to help fill the gaps caused by a shortage of physicians in the region.
