SMH Adopts TMINI Hand-Held Robots to Fine-Tune Knee Replacement Surgery

Thursday, July 10, 2025

SARASOTA (July 10, 2025) – Sarasota Memorial Hospital (SMH) is expanding its orthopedic surgery capabilities with the addition of 10 hand-held, wireless robots.

The TMINI™ Miniature Robotic System, developed by Think Surgical in partnership with Zimmer Biomet, is a next-generation robotic tool that brings the precision of robotic-assisted surgery into a compact instrument that easily integrates into a surgeon’s normal workflow without the footprint of larger systems. Shaped like a traditional power tool used in knee surgery, TMINI leverages robotic technology and preoperative CT scans to guide accurate bone preparation and implant placement during total knee arthroplasty (TKA).

SMH orthopedic surgeons Sean Dingle, MD, and Edward Stolarski, MD, began using the TMINI in select knee replacement cases this week, with additional surgeons set to follow in the coming months.

“The beauty of TMINI lies in its simplicity and ease of integration,” said David Patterson, Associate Chief Nursing Officer at SMH. “It provides the accuracy of robotic technology without introducing the complexity and space requirements of a traditional robotic platform.”

The TMINI system, first cleared by the FDA in 2023, continues to evolve in both capability and compatibility. The model in use at SMH is the latest version, approved in 2024 for exclusive integration with Zimmer Biomet’s Persona® Knee System, enabling tailored implant positioning aligned with individual surgeon preferences and surgical techniques.

Patterson noted that SMH's adoption of TMINI complements the hospital’s existing use of Zimmer Biomet’s ROSA® robotic platform, reinforcing its commitment to providing a full spectrum of digital and robotic solutions for joint replacement. Together, these technologies support optimal implant fit, stability, and long-term patient outcomes.
