Tuesday, October 30, 2018

SARASOTA (Oct. 30, 2018) – The Sarasota Memorial Nursing and Rehabilitation Center received U.S. News & World Report’s  “Best Nursing Home” rating today – another demonstration of the high-quality services Sarasota Memorial provides across its full continuum of care.

In its 2018-2019 report, U.S. News reviewed more than 15,000 nursing homes across the nation – fewer than 3,000 received the “Best Nursing Home” designation. Since its inception in 2009, the U.S. News nursing home ratings have relied on data from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), the federal agency that sets and enforces standards for hospitals, home health agencies and nursing homes. Sarasota Memorial Nursing and Rehabilitation Center – an SMH facility that offers skilled nursing for long-term residents as well as short-term rehabilitation, has consistently earned CMS’ highest 5-Star ratings, as has Sarasota Memorial’s acute care hospital and home health organization.

Maria DeCarlo, vice president of Rehabilitation Services“Choosing a nursing home for your loved one is not easy, but quality ratings like these can help you see how different skilled nursing facilities stack up when it comes to important quality measures, staffing, health and safety violations, and overall care,” said Maria DeCarlo, vice president of Rehabilitation Services for Sarasota Memorial Health Care System. “We are proud to be recognized for delivering not only top-notch hospital care, but also home health and skilled nursing and rehabilitative care to our community.”

The U.S. News study looked at a range of quality indicators, such as how frequently facilities physically restrain residents or administer anti-psychotic, anti-anxiety or hypnotic drugs (lower is better because they can pose serious risks for older adults and those with dementia). It also evaluated staffing and how much time nurses spend with residents, as well as measures of recommended care, such as appropriate flu vaccination, and care-related complications, including pressure sores and urinary tract infections. Sarasota Memorial Nursing and Rehabilitation Center earned a “high performing” rating for those measures and overall care.
