SARASOTA, Fla. (Feb. 13, 2024) – Sarasota Memorial Health Care System (SMH) was named on the Forbes list of “America’s Best Large Employers 2024” today.

In this year’s annual list, SMH ranked among the top 20% of thousands of large U.S. employers, across all industries, and among the top three largest healthcare employers in Florida.

Produced in partnership with research company Statista, America’s Best Employers rankings demonstrate sustained performance over the past three years and are based on independent surveys of more than 170,000 U.S. employees working at companies employing at least 1,000 people in the United States. The 2024 list includes all top-ranked companies as well as top-ranking mid-size organizations (those with 1,000 to 5,000 employees) and large organizations (those with more than 5,000 employees).

With more than 10,000 employees, SMH ranked #107 among all large employers; in Florida, SMH ranked #3 among the state’s largest healthcare employers.

Sarasota Memorial CEO David Verinder credits the public health system’s deep roots in the community and team’s shared mission for the repeated recognition by Forbes.Sarasota Memorial CEO David Verinder

“Sarasota Memorial has been caring for this community for nearly 100 years,” he said. “There is a sense of pride and community ownership that has inspired our staff through the decades and continues to guide us today.”

The recognition by Forbes comes on top of a growing list of national accolades SMH received in 2023, including multiple “Best Hospital” rankings and ratings from U.S. News & World Report, continuous 5-star ratings from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, Magnet designation for 20 consecutive years, and repeated recognition on Newsweek’s list of the “World’s Best Hospitals” to name a few.

In previous years, Forbes/Statista also recognized SMH among Florida’s Best-in-State Employers and among the nation’s Best Employers for Women, a designation given to less than 1% of large companies nationwide. As with all Forbes lists, companies pay no fee to be considered.

For the 2024 rankings, employees surveyed were asked to rate their employer based on a range of criteria, including working hours, gender pay equity, opportunities for training and promotion, workload expectations, parental leave benefits, and the degree of diversity on the management team. Participants were also asked if they would recommend their employer to others, and were given the chance to rate other employers in their respective industries. Responses were given by current employees, prior employees, and those familiar with the company through friends, family or peers within their industry. The survey analysis included data from the last three years, with a heavier weight given to evaluations from current employees and more recent data.

All responses were tallied and weighted to produce a score for each company. The 1,000 companies with the highest scores landed on Forbes’ final lists—400 on America’s Best Midsize Employers 2024, and 600 on America’s Best Large Employers 2024.
