Minimally Invasive & Robotic Surgery
Minimally invasive tools and techniques allow surgeons to perform a wide array of surgeries through small, keyhole-size incisions. The surgical site typically requires only a stitch or two to close, versus larger incisions required by open surgery, and typically result in shorter hospital stays and quicker return to normal activities.
Our minimally invasive surgery team consists of more than 200 general and specialty surgeons – the largest and most experienced in the region – offering multidisciplinary expertise that ranges from cardiothoracic surgery to urological, gynecological and surgical oncology procedures.

Sarasota Memorial was the first hospital in the region to pioneer da Vinci robotic surgery, and now offers the most experienced robotic team in the region. We have three robots, including the latest da Vinci Xi optimized for complex cancers, a suite of “intelligent” operating rooms and more than two dozen da Vinci-trained surgeons in multiple specialties.
The da Vinci system is equipped with revolutionary tools that provide superior visualization, enhanced dexterity, and greater precision for optimal performance of minimally invasive procedures. Its 3D cameras provide magnification 10 times that of the naked eye, while the instruments offer articulation and range of motion not possible with the human wrist.
The benefits for patients are significant:
- Reduced pain and trauma
- Fewer complications
- Reduced risk of infection
- Reduced risk of blood loss, fewer transfusions
- Shorter hospital stays
- Faster recovery
- Quicker return to normal activities

Urological & Gynecological Robotic Surgery
Sarasota Memorial has the region's greatest number of da Vinci-trained Urological and Gynecological robotic surgeons, offering patients the latest options in minimally invasive procedures.
Our robotic team was first in the region to expand use of the da Vinci-S robot to offer minimally invasive robotic surgery for women with gynecological cancers and a range of non-cancerous conditions, including hysterectomies, partial hysterectomies, myomectomies and other laparoscopic surgeries. The program is led by Gynecological Oncologist James Fiorica, MD, medical director of Sarasota Memorial’s Women’s Cancer Services.
Sarasota Memorial was designated Florida’s first Robotic Training Epicenter for Urology-led Gynecological surgery. Led by Urologic Surgeon Robert I. Carey, MD, PhD, FACS, Sarasota Memorial hosts surgeons from across the nation as they study specialized surgical techniques, with a special focus on Robotic Complete Female Pelvic Floor Reconstruction for vaginal vault prolapse and urinary incontinence in women.
