SARASOTA, Fla. – (Jan. 4, 2018) – Sarasota Memorial Health Care System recruited veteran Gynecologic Oncologist Richard Boothby, MD, FACOG, to its First Physician Group
(FPG) network this week.
Board certified in Obstetrics-Gynecology (OB-GYN) and Gynecologic (GYN) Oncology, Dr. Boothby has more than 30 years’ experience caring for women with gynecologic cancers. He earned his medical degree at the University of South Florida in Tampa, Fla., and completed his OB-GYN residency at University Hospital in Jacksonville, Fla. He completed a two-year fellowship offering advanced specialty training in GYN oncology at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia in 2011.
This week, Dr. Boothby officially takes over the practice of longtime colleague GYN Oncologist James Fiorica, MD, who is transitioning from clinical practice to a full-time leadership role as Sarasota Memorial Health Care System’s chief medical officer. Dr. Fiorica will continue to lead Sarasota Memorial’s Cancer Research Program and to serve as principal investigator on national research projects and protocols.
“While this transition is a bittersweet one for me, as I will be stepping away from direct care and the many patient relationships that have inspired me over the years, I have every confidence in Dr. Boothby’s skills and clinical acuity,” Dr. Fiorica said. “He has devoted his entire professional life to the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of gynecological cancers and is dedicated to providing his patients with the highest level of care.”
Dr. Boothby came to Sarasota from Lakeland, Fla., where he spent the last 10 years caring for GYN oncology patients at Lakeland Regional Health Hollis Cancer Center. Previously, he practiced nearly 10 years at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Orlando, Fla., where he also served as director of clinical research, vice chair of the center’s Institutional Review Board and a principal investigator for the Gynecologic Oncology Group.
In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Boothby has been active in academic medicine and has published/presented numerous research studies focused on diagnosing and treating cervical, ovarian and endometrial cancers. During his 30-year career as a practicing physician, Dr. Boothby served as an assistant professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Cornell University Medical College and as an associate professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at University of Florida College of Medicine.
First Physicians Group’s GYN Oncology practice is located at 1888 Hillview St., Sarasota
