SARASOTA (Nov. 6, 2017) – For the past year, Sarasota Memorial Hospital has held a coveted spot as the only hospital in Florida with the federal government’s highest 5-Star rating.
In its latest updates this fall, the federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) also bestowed 5-Star ratings on Sarasota Memorial’s nursing and rehabilitation center and its home care program.
“There are many personal considerations that go into choosing a nursing home or home care services, but they should always revolve around strong clinical outcomes and high-quality services,” said Maria DeCarlo, Vice President of Rehabilitation Services for Sarasota Memorial Health Care System. “Whether you are choosing a hospital, nursing home or home health agency, CMS star ratings are an easy and transparent way for families to evaluate quality and performance when choosing care providers for your loved ones. As the region’s only not-for-profit hospital and safety net provider, we are proud to be recognized for delivering not only top-notch hospital care, but also home health and skilled nursing/rehabilitative care to our community.”
In its most recent updates, CMS reviewed nearly 16,000 nursing homes across the nation, with tougher standards to evaluate medical care, including facilities’ use of anti-psychotic drugs, which can pose serious risks for older adults and those with dementia. Their methodology also measures staffing ratios, successful discharges, emergency visits, and re-hospitalizations, in addition to state-conducted health inspections and how much time nurses spend with residents.
To evaluate home health agencies, CMS reviewed 27 process, outcome and patient experience measures, including timely initiation of care, patient/caregiver education, re-hospitalizations, and progress patients make in their prescribed treatment plans.
The 5-Star ratings are used as a quality indictor by other national organizations that rank health care providers as well. This week, U.S. News & World Report included Sarasota Memorial’s Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in its 2017-18 “Best Nursing Homes” report, in part because of its CMS rating – according to U.S. News, only 15 percent of nursing homes across the nation achieved its top performance rating.
Meanwhile, Sarasota Memorial Home Care was recognized in 2017 HomeCare Elite®, a national list of top-performing home health agencies in the United States. Now in its 12th year, the Elite program uses CMS data and other quality indicators to list the best providers in the home care profession. This year, 9,064 home health agencies were considered, resulting in Elite recognition for 2,268.
