SMH’s First Physicians Group Welcomes Specialty Physicians

SARASOTA, Fla. (Aug. 13, 2019) – Sarasota Memorial Health Care System welcomed three specialty physicians to its First Physicians Group (FPG) network and community: Anthony Cavalli, DO, Physical Medicine & Rehab; Joshua Gross, MD, Palliative Medicine; and David Stone, MD, Vascular Neurology.

Dr. Cavalli joined FPG’s Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation practice this week to care for patients recovering from a wide range of injuries and illnesses in Sarasota Memorial’s Rehabilitation Pavilion. He received his medical degree in May 2011 from Lincoln Memorial University in Harrogate, TN. He completed an internship in Internal Medicine at Keesler Medical Center in Biloxi, MS in 2012, followed by a residency in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the University of Minnesota in 2019. Prior to his residency, Dr. Cavalli served active duty as a medical officer and flight surgeon with the United States Air Force for three years. He is a member of the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, the Florida Osteopathic Medical Association and the Military Officers Association of America. His research focus includes studies on complementary and alternative medicines for rehabilitation, carpal tunnel, musculoskeletal injection therapy and ultrasound-guided minimally invasive procedures.

Dr. Gross joined FPG’s Supportive Care practice in July to provide palliative and supportive care to patients facing complicated medical problems related to prolonged illness or serious injury. He completed his medical degree at St. George’s University School of Medicine in the West Indies in 2015, and his internal medicine residency with Florida Atlantic University in 2018. He went on to complete a fellowship in Hospice and Palliative Care at the University of South Florida in 2019. His research focus includes studies on metastatic hepatocellular carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma in relationship to Human Papillomavirus and aldosteronism. 

Dr. Stone joined FPG’s Neurology practice in July to help provide a range of care to patients hospitalized with stroke and other neurological disorders. He earned a Ph.D in Neuroscience and his medical degree at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in 2012 and 2014, respectively. He completed his Neurology residency and a fellowship in Vascular Neurology at the University of Florida in 2018 and 2019. He is a member of the American Academy of Neurology, with more than six awards and grants for excellence in academic  research and two chairman’s awards from the University of Florida for excellence in patient care. His research focus includes studies on ischemic stroke, Parkinson’s disease and immunology of neurodegenerative diseases. 

Drs. Cavalli and Gross will see patients at Sarasota Memorial Hospital on an inpatient basis. Dr. Stone will see patients on an inpatient at SMH as well as an outpatient basis at FPG’s Neurology practice, 1921 Waldemere St., Ste. 710.
