The Pediatrics Unit at SMH is a vital link in an integrated pediatric health care delivery system. The 26 bed Unit specializes in the care of children from birth through 17 years of age. Patients are admitted to the unit from physicians offices, the Emergency Care Center, post operatively, received from other facilities, or directly from home. Children come to the unit because they need close monitoring of vital functions and skilled medical and nursing interventions during a period of physical compromise. The severity of their compromise determines the types of interventions, length of stay or the need to transfer to a tertiary care facility.
Board-certified pediatricians from All Children's Hospitals are available on a consultant basis around the clock. Children with respiratory, hematologic, gastrointestinal, neurologic, infectious diseases, ENT, trauma, psychiatric and urologic conditions are treated on the unit as well as pre and post operative surgical care. Children with respiratory or hemodynamic compromise requiring intensive interventions and monitoring are transferred to the appropriate level of care. The entire family becomes an integral part of the care process on the unit. A family centered care approach with close parental/professional collaboration is practiced.
