The First Sound program offers screening for congenital hearing loss for all newborn babies in the Neonatal Intensive Care and Mother Baby Units at Sarasota Memorial Hospital, prior to discharge. Screenings usually take only a few minutes and are painless.
Most babies are expected to pass the hearing screen. Occasionally, some newborns may not pass the screening due to wax, water or other fluid in the ears. This does not necessarily indicate deafness, but a referral to a pediatric trained audiologist is needed for further evaluation and testing. Screening results are sent to the primary care physician by the hospital. Parents are contacted by phone after discharge to support referral to the audiologist.
