We'll help get your baby's birth day off to a healthy start long before your delivery date. You'll find knowledgeable support at Sarasota Memorial to help you get ready for this big event and your new role as a parent. While you're waiting for your child's birth day, take advantage of the helpful classes and informational resources that Sarasota Memorial offers. You'll be an expert by the time your newborn arrives.
Our education courses are the next best thing to an instruction manual for newborns. They cover everything from prenatal care to birthing and parenting. We do encourage you to register for classes early in your pregnancy (2nd trimester) to ensure class availability.
Lactation Consultants
Our nursing staff is highly
trained and experienced in assisting new mothers with breastfeeding. Our
Lactation Consultants are available as needed for consultations. If you have
problems after you leave the hospital, you can phone our WARM line at
941-917-7413.

Tours of Maternal/Infant Services
Tour the obstetrical and neonatal units on designated Tuesdays at 6:30PM and designated Saturdays at 10:30AM. (NOTE: Those taking the Prepared Childbirth Course will receive a tour as part of the course unless class is taken at Clark Road Site). Pre-registration is required.
Baby Care Basics Course
Provides basic information on infant care. Topics will include bathing, feeding, diapering, safety issues, as well as the normal appearance, reflexes and behavior of newborns. Fee: $45/couple.
Time: 6:30-9:30PM weeknights, or 1-4:00PM, Saturdays.
Infant CPR
Taught by American Heart Association certified instructors. Topics will cover CPR, choking and injury prevention. This course should be considered a must for all parents/grandparents/baby-sitters. (This is not a recertification class for Child/Healthcare workers.) Fee: $30/individual, $50/couple.
Time:
6:30-9:00PM week nights -- or 1-3:30PM on Saturdays.
Prepared Childbirth/Lamaze
Ideally taken toward the end of the pregnancy (we suggest you pick a course that will finish 2-4 weeks before your due date). Topics cover labor and delivery (including coping skills), cesarean birth and postpartum. A tour of the Sarasota Memorial Hospital maternity unit will be given as part of this course. Fee: $75/couple.
Time: 7-9:00PM for 5 weeks, weeknights -- or 9AM-5:00PM,1 day on Saturday -- or 1-5:00PM for 2 Saturdays. A two session Sat/Sun afternoon course is also offered at the Institute for Advance Medicine off of Clark Road Near I-75.
Boot Camp for New Dads
A workshop taught by fathers, utilizing a man-to-man approach to fatherhood. A great opportunity for expectant dads to obtain the insights of veteran dads on the challenges of becoming a father. This innovative, national program is being funded locally by the Community Foundation of Sarasota County.

Time: 10AM-1PM, 1 class session on a Saturday

Breastfeeding Basics
Provides guidance & gives new learning skills for breastfeeding. Topics include benefits of human milk, breast structure, techniques of breastfeeding, family adjustment, and mother's nutrition. Support persons are encouraged to attend the classes with the mothers. Fee: $40/couple.
Time: 6:00-8:00PM a weeknight -- or 10:00AM-12:00PM for 1 Saturday.
Breastfeeding Part 2: Pumping and Returning To Work
Topics include the "how to" of pumping breast milk, review of various types of pumps, and ideas on breastfeeding while returning to work outside of the home. This class can be taken while pregnant or after the baby is born. Fee: $20 for 1 hour class on a weeknight or Saturday.
Big Brother/Big Sister
For children who are 'expecting' a new brother/sister. The children are involved in many activities including a special tour of the maternity unit. Parents are requested to stay with the children for the class. *Note: children should be at least 3 years old. One class session. Fee: $20 for 1 sibling, $15/each additional sibling.
Time: Children 3-5 years, 10AM-Noon on a Saturday
Children 6yrs+, 12:30-2:30PM on a Saturday.
Support Group
Mothers & Babies Get Together
Weekly meetings for moms and their babies to share joys, frustrations, tips and companionship, every Wednesday in the Waldemere Medical Plaza 2nd floor 1921 Waldemere St. (Room will be posted). Moms with babies birth to 6 months meet 11 a.m.-noon; moms with babies 6 months to 1 year meet 12:30-1:30 p.m. FREE…No registration required.
New Courses starting 2010!!!!
Our B.A.B.I.E.Smh Program is ‘giving birth’ to two new courses in 2010!! The following is information about each of them. Pre-registration is necessary for both courses and can be done by calling 917-1700.
Childbirth: Natural Strategies Class: A perfect addition to our Prepared Childbirth/Lamaze Course for those who hope to use more natural strategies to help facilitate labor progress and cope with their labor and birth experience. Topics will include instruction and practice in using advanced tools for a natural birth. Participants need to complete a Prepared Childbirth/Lamaze course prior to attendance. Two week course (2 hour sessions one night/week).
Fee: $35 per couple.
Our 1st class for this will be Wednesday, Feb 27 – Mar. 3rd from 7 – 9 PM. We will be offering this every other month.
Infant Car Seat Class: 80% of all car seats are installed improperly and those children are not properly protected in the event of a car accident. This one session class instructs participants in the proper installation of infant car seats, and how to avoid the most common mistakes that put infants at risk. At the completion of the class an individual check of the participant’s car seat installation will be performed with recommendations for improved safety. Class is for adults only; no children/infants should attend the event. Participants must bring the car seat (& the owner’s manual for the car seat as well as the manual for the vehicle in which the seat is being installed). Fee: $25 for 2 hour class held on a Saturday.
Our 1st class for this will be March 6 from 9:30 – 11:30 AM.
