About Sarasota Memorial’s Sleep Disorders Centers
Sarasota Memorial’s Sleep Disorders Centers
are highly specialized outpatient facilities equipped to evaluate and treat people suffering from sleep apnea or
sleep-related problems.
Established in 1992 , Sarasota Memorial’s Sleep Disorders
Centers – located on the hospital main campus and at
Sarasota Memorial’s Care Center at Blackburn Point in
Osprey – have consistently been awarded the nation’s
highest level of accreditation by The American Academy of

specializing in sleep disorders medicine.
Their experience in this highly specialized area of
medicine, combined with the resources of Sarasota
Memorial Health Care System – one of “America’s Best
Hospitals” – make the Sleep Disorders Centers a regional
referral center for southwest Florida.

After consultation with, and comprehensive evaluation by,
a sleep specialist, each patient is diagnosed and
appropriate therapy is determined. As part of the
consultation and evaluation, a sleep study may be
performed during a period of one or two nights.
Hospitalization is not required. During a sleep study, the
patient is monitored by painless, noninvasive technology.
A sleep test (polysomnogram) simultaneously records
heart rate, brain waves, breathing, oxygenation, and eye
and leg movement. Treatment for a sleep disorder may
include a prescription for a device to aid the patient's
breathing while sleeping, medication, or light therapy as
well as neuropsychiatric interventions, including
biofeedback. If indicated, referral to or consultations with
other specialists might be recommended to aid in
diagnosis and treatment.
Will insurance cover these services?
Most commercial
insurance policies that cover outpatient tests, such as an
X-ray or EEG, will also cover the cost of an evaluation and
overnight sleep study at an accredited sleep center.
Medicaid and Medicare may have more restrictive policies
on coverage.
