You Gotta Have Friends: Support Groups
The Stroke Center Support Group
An individual's personality and emotional state, together with the support of friends and loved ones, are major aspects of stroke recovery. This group is specially designed to provide education, support and socialization for survivors of stroke and their families.
A separate family group meets during part of the stroke support session. Separating into groups provides a time for family members to talk with other families about their own challenges in providing care and support.
Members of the Sarasota Memorial Stroke Center of Excellence are available to offer clinical expertise, professional group facilitation and education.
The group meets the second Wednesday morning of every month from 10:00-11:30 a.m. in the 4A-B meeting room at Sarasota Memorial Hospital. Take the "B" elevators to the 4th floor. Follow signs to Windows Cafeteria. The conference room is just past the cafeteria on your right. Refreshments and valet parking are provided by Sarasota Memorial.
For more information call 941-917-7048.
Aphasia Support Group
The Aphasia Support Group is designed to improve socialization using different modes of communication.
While Aphasia impairs a person’s ability to process language, it does not affect intelligence. During a group meeting, aphasic individuals and family members separate into two groups for some of the meeting. This allows the opportunity for aphasic individuals to communicate without their love ones present and it provides a safe place to discuss changes in their lives emotionally, physically and economically. A facilitator keeps the sessions focused – encouraging all participants to express themselves.
The group meets the 1st Monday of each month from 5:00 p.m. – 6:30 p.m. at the 4 th floor A-B meeting room at Sarasota Memorial Hospital. Take the “B” elevators to the 4 th floor. Follow the signs to Windows Cafeteria. The conference room is just past the cafeteria on the right. Sessions, refreshments and valet parking are provided by Sarasota Memorial.
