The American Cancer Society recommends these guidelines as a personal plan of action against breast cancer:
If you are less than 40 years old
Examine your breasts monthly
Have a breast exam by your doctor at least every three years
Have a baseline mammogram between the ages of 35-39
If you are between 40-49 years old
Examine your breasts monthly
Have a breast exam by your doctor every year
Have a mammogram every year
If you are age 50 and over
Examine your breasts monthly
Have a breast exam by your doctor every year
Have a mammogram every year
Talk with your doctor or other health care provider about your personal plan of action. Be sure to practice self-examination of your breasts every month. If you find a lump, thickening, or other changes, you should see your doctor without delay.
