decision. For many, it is also a life-saving decision.
The
Comprehensive Bariatric Program (CBP) at Sarasota Memorial Hospital is dedicated to the treatment &
prevention of obesity and allied diseases. These treatments will
include a comprehensive weight loss program/support group, diabetes
management and surgical intervention including the laparoscopic and
open Roux-en-Y gastric bypass. These surgical procedures are the
most effective treatments for morbid obesity currently available.
Sarasota
Memorial utilizes a multi-disciplinary, compassionate approach to
bariatric surgical care, providing your patients with extensive pre-
and post-operative education including a nutritional
assessment/counseling, 6-week comprehensive weight loss program,
psychological and pre-fitness assessment, post operative visits and
monthly support groups.
Is Bariatric Surgery
Right For You?
Factors to consider prior to recommending bariatric surgery:
· Body
Mass Index (BMI) greater than 40 or
· BMI between 35
and 40 with significant co-morbidities
· Age 18 or
greater
· Psychologically stable
· Letter of
Medical Necessity from Primary Care Provider
· 6 consecutive
months of documentation reflecting Doctor or Registered dietitian
supervised
Nutrition Program along with 6 consecutive
months of Physician progress notes
documenting patient's weight progress.
Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass Procedure
The Roux-en-Y
gastric bypass is the most frequently performed weight loss surgery in
the United States. Weight loss occurs by reducing the size of the
stomach, creating a small upper pouch restricting the amount of food
consumed and a portion of the small bowel is bypassed creating a
modest amount of malabsorption. In most cases, patients report an
early sense of fullness combined with a sense of satiety that
decreases the desire to eat.

What Are The Key Components Of
Sarasota Memorial's Bariatric Program?
Pre-surgical evaluation/Education
To ensure their medical/physical
fitness for surgery, participants are evaluated and counseled by a:
· Bariatric surgeon
· Anesthesiologist
· Bariatrician
· Psychologist /Pscyhotherapist
· Dietitian
· Physical
Therapist
All
participants will be required to receive clearance from a
Pulmonologist and Cardiologist.
Education
Each candidate
will receive comprehensive pre-op education. Their understanding of
the procedure, diet and behavioral expectations will be assessed.
Participants are required to attend a 6-week comprehensive weight loss
program, psychotherapy and commit to a post-surgical follow-up program
including attending support groups, following diet recommendations,
maintaining an appropriate exercise regimen and attending doctors'
appointments.
Surgical team
Once patients
are cleared for bariatric surgery, the procedure will be performed by
two of our specially trained surgeons at Sarasota Memorial.
Patient care team
All program
staff has received specialized bariatric care education, including
sensitivity training.
Nutrition counseling
All patients
will receive nutritional counseling/ 6-week comprehensive weight loss
program and an assessment prior to the procedure and will have access
to a dietitian who specializes in Bariatric nutrition during recovery
in the hospital, as well as post operative appointments and support
groups.
Long-term Expectations
Most patients
lose weight quickly after surgery and continue to lose for 12 to 18 months after
the procedure. Although patients often regain some of the weight, many
are expected to maintain long-term weight loss of approximately 50-
80% of their excess weight. The outcome will vary based on diet
compliance and commitment to exercise regimen.
Long-term Support
Sarasota
Memorial Bariatric Team is committed to offering long-term nutrition,
exercise and emotional support through monthly support groups and
follow-up appointments. The Bayside Center for Behavioral Health, Rehabilitation Services, Diabetes Treatment Services and Food &
Nutrition professionals will all offer their expertise to ensure
long-term success.
