At Sarasota Memorial Health Care
System, we understand the importance of recognizing our most important
resources-our physicians, employees, and volunteers. These values
are based on our desire to create an environment which supports-and
rewards-caring, compassion, excellence, teamwork, trust, mutual
respect, recognition and cost-effective, ethical behavior. These
reward and recognition programs are all about celebrating people
who truly are taking pride in taking care of people.
Sarasota Memorial hosted its Ninth Annual “Awards of Excellence”
ceremony March 27 to honor employees, physicians, volunteers and
community partners who demonstrated outstanding service and dedication
to patients and staff during the past year. More than 500 people
packed the hospital's Waldemere Auditorium to cheer on the winners.

From left are Sarasota County Public Hospital Board Chairman Robert
Strasser; SMHCS Leader of the Year Dolores Asselin,
RN, BA, MA, of Nursing Administration; EXCEL Employee of the
Year Denise Hudson, RN II, of Surgery; Sarasota Memorial President and
CEO Gwen M. MacKenzie; and former Sarasota County Public Hospital
Board member Jim Tollerton, who funds the organization's EXCEL
Employee of the Month Award through the Sarasota Memorial Healthcare
Foundation. Hudson and Asselin, both of whom have worked at the
hospital for nearly three decades, were chosen for the prestigious
honors from the health system's more than 3,000 staff members. The
committee of peers who selected the award winners cited them as role
models for excellence in the delivery of health care.
EXCEL:
Sarasota Memorial's EXCEL Employee of the Month Program recognizes
staff members who are outstanding role models for their co-workers.
These special employees, who are nominated by their peers, excel
in their jobs, demonstrate great customer service and go out
of their way to help others. The EXCEL Program was established
in 1985 by Jim Tollerton (who served on the Sarasota County Public
Hospital Board from 1974 to 1984) to recognize distinguished
staff. Tollerton funds the EXCEL program through the Sarasota
Memorial Healthcare Foundation Inc.
