Caring for the community includes a healthy dose of
education and prevention. Through community partnerships with businesses,
religious congregations, schools and universities, social service
agencies, civic organizations and others, Sarasota Memorial is establishing
a strong community focus on health and wellness. With educational
and prevention/screening programs promoting healthier behaviors,
the results of our community outreach efforts are gratifying: we
are seeing improved performance at school, increased productivity
at work, and overall a better quality of life for people living in
Sarasota County. • Community
Health Education
Each year, Sarasota
Memorial hosts community events to promote health and prevent illness,
including health fairs, screenings, seminars and support groups.
Sarasota Memorial also works closely with local congregations as
lead facilitator of the area’s Parish Nurse Program, a special
partnership with the faith community that integrates faith and health
in the daily life of local parishioners. Through education and personal
health counseling, Sarasota Memorial helps provides the tools and
expertise parish nurses need to identify early risk factors and educate
parishioners about appropriate lifestyle choices within the context
of their faith.

Newtown Wellness Program
A wide-ranging community health
initiative designed to stop the accelerated rate at which African
Americans in Sarasota County are dying from diabetes and heart disease,
the Newtown Wellness Program provides targeted health promotion programs
to approximately 3,400 African American residents in Newtown – roughly
25 percent of the county’s African American population. Services
include health screenings, educational programs and classes in specific
subjects, such as managing diabetes, identified by needs assessments
and neighborhood surveys.

Specialist Care
The hospital’s partnership with the
H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Research and Treatment Center in Tampa offers
patients greater access to Moffitt’s physicians and research
trials for unusual or complex cancer cases, while providing expanded
treatment opportunities within their own communities. Meanwhile,
our longstanding affiliation with All Children’s Hospital in
St. Petersburg provides the expertise and resources of All Children’s
specialists at Sarasota Memorial, so children can receive the highest
quality care available in their own home town.
