Once a year, Sarasota Memorial selects a special staff member and a manager from the health system’s 3,500-strong workforce as the EXCEL Employee and the Leader of the Year.
This year’s Employee of the Year, chosen from the EXCEL Employee of the Month Award-Winners for 2012, is Norlys “Norlie” Alvarez-Grillo, core clinical technician II in the Operating Room.
Norlie received nominations from dozens of colleagues, managers and physicians for the Employee of the Month Award, who call her one of the “best of the best” of the Surgery Department. She plays a critical role in ensuring the case schedule runs smoothly in Neurology, Orthopedics, ENT, Ophthalmology and Urology. As one nomination noted: “You cannot teach the talent she has—she is a natural!” Co-workers also admire her willingness to help others — she always lends a hand and gives her all, no matter how large the task. Both surgeons and staff have come to rely on her attention to detail and diligence.
Leader of the year
Each year, Sarasota Memorial also honors a manager or director who demonstrates exceptional excellence in leadership.
The recipient of this year’s Leader Award is Robert Santos. An employee of SMHCS since 1991, Robert is manager of Tech Assessment/Biomedical Engineering for Supply Chain Management. Chosen from previous winners of the hospital’s quarterly Leadership?Award, Robert is described as a manager who is well-respected by his peers and employees throughout the organizatio for always going above and beyond in his duties and commitment to SMH.
