Adam BrightSARASOTA, Fla. (May 16, 2011) – Sarasota Memorial Hospital Chief of Surgery Adam Bright, MD, has been elected president of the Florida Orthopedic Society (FOS), a professional association representing about 1,100 orthopedic surgeons throughout the state. He is slated to take office Sunday, May 22, after delivering the presidential address at the organization’s annual meeting that starts May 19 in Orlando.

An orthopedic surgeon in practice at Schofield, Hand & Bright Orthopedics in Sarasota, Dr. Bright has a long history of service to FOS, having served on the board and in various leadership positions for more than 10 years. In the past three years, he served one-year terms as First Vice President, Second Vice President and Secretary. At Sarasota Memorial, Dr. Bright has been involved in multiple committees focused on quality improvement and developing best practices for orthopedic surgery and care.

During Dr. Bright’s executive terms, the Society has tackled myriad issues, including medical liability, prescription drug abuse and healthcare reform. In the upcoming year, one of the larger projects he’ll help spearhead is a collaborative with the Florida Hospital Association aimed at reducing the incidence of potentially preventable readmissions after total hip replacements. The joint initiative is believed to be the first collaborative of a state specialty society and hospital association aimed at addressing readmissions. The goal is to develop best practices and action items that can be disseminated throughout the medical community in the coming months.

Another initiative Dr. Bright plans to spearhead this year revolves around the use of electronic medical records. He will be encouraging FOS members to establish workgroups to refine the systems to help physicians track and evaluate patient outcomes and quality data, rather than focus primarily on practice management and billing functions.

FOS presidents typically take on a presidential project as well, and Dr. Bright says his will focus on youth fitness. His goal is to have physicians and community leaders build a new playground for children during next year's FOS annual meeting, which will be held here in Sarasota. His presidential term will expire in May 2012.
