SMH launches new iPhone app ... a free service for Smart Phone users

Dec. 21, 2010 – (Sarasota, FL) – Residents and visitors to the Suncoast now can find a doctor, nearby walk-in center or information on a full range of hospital and outpatient services with just the touch of a button thanks to a new smart phone app introduced by Sarasota Memorial Health Care System today.

The health system unveiled its free “Discover SMH” iPhone/iPad app today as an easy, convenient way to help people find Sarasota Memorial’s doctors, services and facilities. The app allows users to browse through a dynamic directory of doctors and the hospital/health system’s services and neighborhood care centers, and call them directly or retrieve useful information such as directions, hours of operation and contact details, including telephone, websites and email.

"It’s like having a portable directory of SMH and our doctors in your pocket,” Sarasota Memorial Marketing Director Peter Taylor said. “You just click on the “Find A Doctor” icon or one of our neighborhood care centers to locate a doctor or service by whatever criteria is most important to you.”

The app allows users to search for a doctor by name, specialty, geographic location or keyword, making it easy to navigate among more than 750 doctors and 50 specialties. It uses the iPhone’s global positioning system to quickly direct users to the system’s two emergency rooms or any facility within the Sarasota Memorial’s network.

Physicians can also be stored as “favorites” for quick look-up. SMH facilities are all pinned on a dynamic map that allows the user to find out which walk-in centers, emergency rooms or any other SMH locations are closest to their present location. And all of the health system’s services are listed alphabetically, which makes browsing through SMH’s database a breeze. There also is a link to Sarasota Memorial’s Facebook and Twitter social media sites for those interested in a more interactive experience with SMH.

Taylor said the app is designed to make navigating the system’s services and facilities easier for local residents, but also will be extremely useful to visitors, especially those suffering chronic medical conditions, or those traveling with friends or relatives with health problems.

In life threatening emergencies, people should always call 911, Taylor said. But in urgent, or non-life threatening emergencies, the app can help you quickly locate the nearest of Sarasota Memorial’s three urgent care walk-in centers, their addresses, hours of operation and phone numbers, or if needed, its emergency rooms.

"If something does happen and you need to find a doctor right away, you literally can grab your iPhone , click on the nearest facility or doctor and call them immediately," Taylor said.

Users can download the free app at the Apple iPhone application store, or visit: www.smh.com/iphone
