SARASOTA, Fla. (May 2, 2013) – Sarasota Memorial Health Care System has been designated a “Gold Standard” Breast Imaging Center of Excellence by the American College of Radiology (ACR).
To earn the nation’s highest breast imaging accreditation, Sarasota Memorial underwent a rigorous review in multiple breast imaging modalities earlier this year by board-certified radiologists and medical physicists with expertise in advanced diagnostic imaging. The “Gold Standard” designation is awarded sparingly to breast health imaging centers that achieve high practice standards in image quality, staff qualifications, facility equipment, quality control procedures and quality assurance programs.
With recent news coverage about radiation dose and safety, the ACR launched a nationwide campaign urging patients referred for imaging studies to go only to facilities that have earned ACR’s gold standard accreditation seal.
“As a regional referral center and the only not-for-profit hospital in the region, Sarasota Memorial is committed to making imaging safe, effective and accessible to those who need it,” said Sharon Chambers, supervisor of Sarasota Memorial’s Breast Health Center. “This designation is a testament to our entire team of board certified radiologists and imaging technologists and their commitment to the highest level of patient safety standards and image quality.”
Sarasota Memorial’s Breast Health Center offers the latest in mammography, stereotactic breast biopsy, breast ultrasound and ultrasound-guided breast biopsy, with a team of imaging and multi-disciplinary specialists with advanced training and certifications in medical imaging and interpretation. Last year, the team performed more than 37,000 exams and procedures.
At Sarasota Memorial, women who are diagnosed with breast cancer – or with suspect lesions – also benefit from the concentrated attention of a breast health navigator and multidisciplinary team of breast cancer and reconstruction surgeons, pathologists, radiologists, radiation and medical oncologists and other specialists who meet regularly to review cases, recommend treatments and ensure patients receive the most advanced care available to diagnose and treat cancer at its earliest and most curable stages.
Sarasota Memorial offers diagnostic breast imaging centers at five outpatient imaging centers in Manatee and Sarasota counties.
