Hospital Strength LogoNational Hospital Strength Index™ Launched to Address Demands of the New Healthcare

September 21, 2011 – The first hospital ratings system to address the new challenges required by healthcare reform that includes all U.S. acute care hospitals and traditionally unrated rural and critical access hospitals was launched today by iVantage Health Analytics, a newly formed healthcare business intelligence and technology company.

Called the Hospital Strength Index™, the strategic planning tool is designed to deliver hospitals a balanced scorecard and comparable rating of their performance as they begin implementing mandates of the 2010 Affordable Care Act. This Index offers hospital executives, trustees and boards of directors an objective way to measure their relative performance among their competitors and across 56 different performance metrics, the most comprehensive tool on the market.

“We are pleased to see such a comprehensive ratings initiative launched in response to the Affordable Care Act. The Hospital Strength Index™, which includes rural and Critical Access Hospitals that are so essential to Americans, is a real plus for our industry. Rural healthcare represents over one-third of all U.S. hospitals and serves over 62 million Americans who have few healthcare choices. The NRHA is committed to advancing performance improvement in our hospitals and is excited to have a tool which allows us to monitor our impact over time,” said Alan Morgan, Chief Executive Officer of the National Rural Health Association.

The Hospital Strength Index reflects the multiple challenges of running a hospital by incorporating the measures on which the industry has worked to gain consensus and standardization. “Meeting those demands won’t be easy. But the Hospital Strength Index is a powerful tool for bringing all of the measures together in one place, one number, for one purpose – for hospitals to continue to meet the healthcare needs of their communities,” said John Morrow, EVP, iVantage Health Analytics.

“The Hospital Strength Index is a big deal because the process of measuring performance is more difficult than ever for administrators. A growing array of measures being adopted by the industry to support transparency has clouded the picture,” said Morrow. “We created the Hospital Strength Index to bring clarity and insight to hospital performance in an increasingly complex and competitive environment.”

“Now more than ever, accurate performance metrics are critical to a hospital’s survival. Healthcare leaders need new perspectives on key market dynamics and business drivers to ensure success in a new era of healthcare delivery. It is a tall order to be able to do everything well in managing a hospital or health system; the Hospital strength Index gives hospital executives the one tool necessary to help them chart a course for success,” said Craig Anderson, Sr., of Dixon Hughes Goodman, LLP, a national public accounting firm with a significant healthcare practice.

The Hospital Strength Index incorporates 56 different measures of performance to help identify those hospitals that are best prepared for success under the new healthcare. The Index includes a unique set of measures rating Market Strength, Value-based Strength and Financial Strength as key pillars for benchmarking and setting new goals under health reform.

The Market Strength includes competitive strength, intensity, size and growth factors essential to ACO development.

The Value-based Strength includes quality, outcomes, patient perspectives, and cost and charge indicators that are essential for earning rewards under CMS’ Value-based Purchasing reimbursement incentives.

The Financial Strength includes income statement and balance sheet ratios most predictive of long-term sustainability that are essential under an environment of reduced payments.

The company named the HealthStrong™ Top 100 Hospitals in the nation, as determined by the Hospital Strength Index, recognizing the top three percent of all U.S. hospitals. The listing of hospitals in alphabetical order follows this release.

The Hospital Strength Index study is underwritten with support from Anthelio Health Solutions, Inc., Dixon Hughes Goodman, LLP, and Tea Leaves Health, LLC.
