Thanks in part to a grant from Sarasota Memorial Health Care Foundation – and many of its own employees – Sarasota Memorial Health Care System will unveil two new ambulances this month, one that will immediately be stationed 24/7 at its freestanding ER in North Port.
Dedicated to the people of North Port, the special ambulance is fitted with equipment you'd find in many intensive care units and will stand ready to provide emergency transport from the North Port ER to the hospital when necessary.
"It’s designed to ensure a continuity of critical care from our North Port ER to the hospital,” said Joann DeSerio, RNC-NIC, transport clinical specialist with Sarasota Memorial. “It replicates the resources you have at the bedside in an ICU, only it's in an ambulance.”
The vehicles cost around $250,000 each. Both ambulances are mobile intensive care units with emergency medical teams trained to provide life saving intervention and stabilization during transport. The first one is being delivered today to North Port. The second one will be put in service in the next couple of weeks.
“Our trustees recognized the need for these ambulances to assist our south county neighbors and found a way to make it a reality,” states Alex Quarles, CFRE, Sarasota Memorial Healthcare Foundation, Inc. president, CEO and trustee. “We are proud that $28,903 of the $422,218 grant was provided by funds raised by the Employees Partners in Caring (EPIC) campaign at the hospital. It shows how much SMHCS employees care about and support their institution and community.”
