NORTH PORT – Sarasota Memorial’s First Physicians Group recently opened two new medical practices in Sarasota Memorial’s ER and Health Care Center in North Port, honoring a commitment to help fill a critical need for more primary and specialty physicians in the medically underserved area.
Longtime Sarasota Memorial physician John Hoertz, MD, will practice obstetrics and gynecology in North Port four days a week, and Elizabeth Cefalu, MD, who recently relocated from a family practice group in Shamokin, Pa., will provide internal medicine and pediatrics care five days a week in North Port.
Both are part of First Physicians Group, a group of more than 72 primary and specialty care physicians recruited and employed by Sarasota Memorial Health Care System. Their offices are located on the second floor of the North Port Medical Plaza and both are accepting new patients. About the Doctors
• Dr. Cefalu is dual board-certified in Pediatrics and Internal Medicine. After completing a master’s degree in public health from The Johns Hopkins University School of Public Health and Tulane University School of Public Health, she earned her medical degree at the Tulane University School of Medicine, New Orleans, in 1995. She completed a combined residency in Internal Medicine and Pediatrics at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, Baltimore, in 1999. She is a fellow of the American Society of Internal Medicine and American Academy of Pediatrics, and a member of the Christian Medical Dental Society.
• Dr. Hoertz, MD, is a board certified obstetrician-gynecologist. He has practiced at Sarasota Memorial since 1971 and joined Sarasota Memorial’s First Physicians Group in 1995. In 2005, the Sarasota Memorial medical staff leadership granted him its prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award. Dr. Hoertz earned his medical degree from State University of New York College of Medicine, Brooklyn, in 1961, completed his residency at the Naval Hospital, Portsmouth, VA, in 1968, and served 11 years active duty in the U.S. Navy Medical Corps before relocating and establishing a practice in Sarasota. He is a fellow of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
