“For your warmth and comfort.” Those are the sentiments passed on by the Friendship Knot Quilters’ Guild of Sarasota to the chemotherapy patients at Sarasota Memorial Hospital who recently received specially designed lap quilts for their warmth and comfort to be used during treatment sessions. Each year the guild takes on a new charity project and this year they wanted to contribute something to make a difference in the lives of cancer patients.
Although the project was originally undertaken for breast cancer patients – October is Breast Health Month – quilts were also made and donated to many other cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy at Sarasota Memorial’s outpatient Day Treatment Center.
Marie Borsellino, RN OCN CBPN-C, Sarasota Memorial’s Breast Health Navigator, said the quilts did more than warm their patients. Many of the designs matched the recipients’ personalities, and so provided an uplifting experience the day they were delivered. For example, one quilt made from fabric that sported a fish theme was the perfect match for an older male patient who loved to share “big fish” stories with staff during his treatment. Another quilt with rich patterns of blue and purple was given to a breast cancer patient who often dressed in the same colors, her favorites.
“We are so grateful for the time and effort dedicated by the quilting guild for our patients,” said Borsellino. “The beauty and craftsmanship involved with each quilt is so amazing. What a gift to our patients that a stranger took the time to create a functional work of art just for them.“
The Friendship Knot Quilters’ Guild is a group of 300 women who share the love of quilting. The Guild promotes learning new skills through lectures and classes. Community involvement is encouraged by making quilts for organizations such as KiDZQuilts (which provides quilts for premature and critically ill babies admitted to Sarasota Memorial’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit) and Habitat for Humanity. Membership is open to all. For more information about the guild, visit: www.friendshipknotquiltersguild.com or email firstname.lastname@example.org
