After your surgery, a specialized nursing team will care for you in our post-anesthesia care unit (PACU). Here, your condition is closely monitored as you recover until you are deemed able to be taken to your hospital room. Patients requiring higher than normal levels of post-surgical care and observation are taken to an intensive care unit (ICU) directly from the operating suite. Family members are not permitted in the PACU, except with pediatric patients.
If you will be staying overnight, family and friends may visit you in your hospital room during normal hospital visiting hours
If you are an ambulatory (same-day) surgery patient, you must make arrangements for a responsible adult to transport and accompany you home and help you get settled. Should you require Home Care services when you leave the hospital, please make these arrangements with your physician prior to your surgery.
Before being discharged from the hospital, a Sarasota Memorial case management representative will meet with you to make sure you have everything you need to continue your recovery after leaving the hospital.
Upon discharge from the hospital, be sure you have your prescriptions, orthopedic devices or medical equipment prescribed for your use, your belongings and any follow up instructions from your physician. A Sarasota Memorial staff member will take you to the first floor discharge services area for your transportation.
