Frequently Asked Billing Questions (FAQ)

How do I get a copy of an itemized bill?
You can call Patient Financial Services at (941) 917-1540 or 800-764-2455.

Will Sarasota Memorial Health Care System accept my insurance?
Sarasota Memorial Health Care System accepts Medicare, Medicaid, Blue Cross, in addition to several other major insurance carriers. See Health Insurances Accepted . Please contact your insurance company or employer for specific contracting guidelines.

Will all of my insurance be billed?
Yes. The billing of insurance is a courtesy to you. If we do not receive payment from your insurance company(ies) within 45 days, we must look to you for payment of the bill in full. Your insurance policy is a contract between you and your insurance company. Communication with your insurance company is highly recommended.

What are outpatient facility fees?
Hospital-based outpatient clinics across the nation charge facility fees for the level/intensity of the nursing services and hospital resources used in an outpatient clinic setting. The fees take into account the operating and overhead costs related to the building, supplies and equipment used, and service provided by Sarasota Memorial’s clinical and support staff. Physicians who treat patients at hospital-owned facilities typically are not owners or employed by those facilities. They use a special code when billing insurance companies and accept lower fees/insurance reimbursement than physicians who use their own equipment, supplies, staff and facilities. For more information, see Explanation of Outpatient Facility Fees.

Does Sarasota Memorial Health Care System accept Medicare Advantage (Replacement) Plans?
The only Medicare Advantage plan we accept at this time is Aetna. Effective Nov. 1, 2009, we renewed a network provider contract for Aetna’s commercial plans and added Aetna’s Medicare Advantage HMO, PPO, POS and network-based private fee-for-service plans to the list of insurances accepted at the hospital and our network of outpatient facilities. We chose Aetna to test the product because Aetna has a strong track record with Sarasota Memorial through its commercial plans and was very responsive in addressing the hospital’s concerns regarding reimbursement rates/practices and administrative oversight associated with Medicare HMOs. At this time, we have not approved any additional plans, due in part to payment denials by providers, lower reimbursement and restrictive administrative responsibilities. We continue to evaluate available plans throughout the year.

Does Sarasota Memorial Health Care System accept credit cards?
Yes. Visa, MasterCard, American Express, and Discover are accepted forms of payment by mail, phone, and via the web site through the online bill pay option.

Who do I contact to update and/or re-bill my insurance?
Please call Patient Financial Services at (941) 917-1540 or 800-764-2455. If possible, have your insurance card available when you call.

How can I check on the status of my account?
If it has been at least 45 days since the date of discharge, contact your insurance carrier for the status on the claim. After speaking with your insurance carrier if you still have questions regarding the claim, contact Patient Financial Services at (941) 917-1540 or 800-764-2455 and a Customer Service Representative will assist you.

What should I do if my insurance denies a claim?
If you feel the claim was denied in error, contact your insurance carrier for a detailed explanation on the claim. Patient Financial Services will also receive an explanation of benefits (EOB) from your insurance company stating the claim has denied. We will reflect this information on your account and a statement will be sent to you requesting payment in full.

How will I know if my hospital bill has been paid?
Your insurance carrier should send you an explanation of benefits (EOB) indicating they have processed the claim. The EOB will also show any payments made to the hospital and the amount that is your responsibility. You will receive a statement from the hospital once all insurances have been processed. This statement will reflect all insurance payments, adjustments, and balance remaining. Any remaining balance is your responsibility.

If I have other questions about my bill?
