Pharmacy Residency Program

Dear Prospective Resident,

Thank you for your interest in the PGY1 residency program at Sarasota Memorial Hospital. The program was established in 1999 and ASHP accredited the following year. This residency offers a unique “real-life” experience in the second largest community hospital in Florida. A wide array of rotations and experiences are available for our residents. Our preceptors are a highly trained diverse group, comprised of pharmacy specialists and unit-based pharmacists with many years of experience. At SMH, the PGY1 residency training is individualized for each resident. Our goal is to prepare you for the next step in your career, which may include the pursuit of a PGY2 residency or a position as a unit-based pharmacist in a community hospital.

We look forward to the opportunity to meet you and to discuss our residency program with you.

Thank you,

Lisa Hymel, PharmD, BCOP

Overview
Sarasota Memorial Hospital is an 826-bed regional medical center. It is the second largest acute care public hospital in Florida. Sarasota Memorial is the only hospital in southwest Florida named in the nation’s top 1% of hospitals for consistent clinical excellence, earning a spot on HealthGrades' “America’s 50 Best Hospitals” list for 2011. Sarasota Memorial has also received the independent health care ratings organization’s highest honor for patient safety – the Patient Safety Excellence Award. Indeed, of approximately 5,000 hospitals in the nation, Sarasota Memorial is one of only five hospitals to achieve both awards five years in a row.  Sarasota Memorial has also achieved Magnet Nursing Services Recognition, the nation’s highest honor for excellence in nursing, given by the American Nurses’ Credentialing Center.

Our pharmacy department consists of a central pharmacy, ICU and OR satellites. Our department provides 24-hour comprehensive pharmacy services. Our pharmacy team includes 50 pharmacists and 32 pharmacy technicians. Our clinical pharmacy staff includes unit-based/decentralized pharmacists including specialty services in Pediatrics, Neonatal Intensive Care, Critical Care, Emergency Care, Cardiology, and Ambulatory Oncology/Day Treatment Center, who work collaboratively with physicians, nurses, and dieticians. We have a highly trained diverse pharmacy staff that is made up of specialists, informatics system administrators and unit-based pharmacists with a strong emphasis on clinical services. Our department accepts pharmacy clerkship students from Florida, Ohio, Nebraska and other states.

Real World Experience
At SMH, we strive to create a nurturing and supportive environment where our highly qualified preceptors play the role of educators and mentors to prepare you for a community-based institutional practice. Our program is large enough to be dynamic and small enough so that we can devote our attention to each resident.

Our pharmacy preceptors are a highly trained diverse group, comprising of pharmacy specialists and unit-based pharmacists. The residency offers a unique “real-life” experience, which will prepare you for a unit-based hospital pharmacist position in a community hospital (Did you know that 95% of all the hospitals in Florida are community hospitals?).

Location
Sarasota, together with its neighbors to the north and south, Manatee County and Charlotte County, form the 7th-largest market in Florida. It is also Florida's third-fastest growing major market. With over 600,000 people, the Sarasota/Manatee/Charlotte area is one of the largest, most affluent markets in Florida. In the Sarasota area, you can enjoy the breathtaking sunsets, educational museums, operas, ballets, plays, golf tournaments, and boat races. The brilliant white sand of Longboat, Lido, and Siesta beaches will make you anxious to see more!

Informatics
SMH operates the best available systems to provide the highest level of patient safety, privacy and real-time access to patient information for physicians, nurses, pharmacists and other caregivers. Currently over 85% of all medication orders are transmitted electronically to the pharmacy system. Both the CPOE and pharmacy systems have patient safety alerts and screening for drug-allergy conflicts, drug-drug interactions, dose range checking and abnormal lab values. Over 95% of all medication dispensing is through PYXIS Medstations (automated dispensing cabinets). We utilize CUBIE (computerized unit based inventory exchange) and PARx (PYXIS automated replenishing) technology to fill the machines using barcode scanning of the medication. Future plans include the implementation of an e-MAR with wireless barcode scanning for electronic medication administration documentation, which will create a closed-loop environment.

In this unique situation, one can fully explore all aspects of Pharmacy Informatics, from basic abilities to retrieve data to implementing system changes & enhancements that directly impact patient care and patient safety. Many opportunities are available to enhance skills in Excel, Access, report writing and more, as Pharmacy Informatics comes to life in this extraordinary setting. Get a glimpse into Information Technology, Servers, Network, and Integration. With the knowledge of Pharmacy Informatics you are able to effectively utilize the systems to enhance your clinical expertise!

Diverse Experience
The program focuses on the core areas of practice specified by ASHP, and offers the flexibility to design the rotations to cater to the resident’s individual interests. Core rotations include Drug Information/Formulary Management, General Medicine (unit-based), Critical Care, Infectious Diseases, Medication Safety, and Informatics. Rotations are also available at affiliated sites throughout Florida.

Employment Opportunities
