Exceptional Care for Children, Close to Home
Sarasota Memorial and All Children's Hospital, a member of the Johns Hopkins Health System, have collaborated to provide exceptional care for children, close to home.
In our 26-bed Pediatric Unit, children receive 24-hour care and monitoring by board-certified pediatric hospitalists – specialty physicians trained in infant, child and adolescent medicine.
Our team of pediatric registered nurses – the only nursing staff in the region recognized with Magnet status, the nation's highest honor in nursing – will be with you during every step of your child's care.
Child Life Specialists are certified members of the Child Life Council with advanced degrees in child development, education or child life. They help educate children about new experiences and feelings that may occur before, during and after a hospital stay. Our Child Life Specialist is present to help provide developmental, educational, social and emotional support to children of all ages ranging from birth to young adulthood.
Parents are an important member of our health care team and our nurses work closely with parents, your child's primary care pediatrician and All Children's specialists to provide the clinical and emotional care your child needs during his or her hospital stay.
Special thanks to rocker Brian Johnson for donating Sarasota Memorial's Brian Johnson Music Therapy Room, dedicated Dec. 22, 2008. The room – equipped with a drum kit, guitars, electronic keyboard and computer outfitted with music recording software – was a gift from the John Entwistle Foundation, a group founded in honor of the late bass player for The Who. A recognized field of medicine, music therapy helps children unwind, relax and recover more quickly.
Child/Family Friendly Features
With whimsical illustrations, inviting play areas and the music therapy room, our Pediatric Unit is specially designed to help children feel safe, decrease their anxiety and help normalize the hospital environment.
Thanks to our community donors, our play areas are continually stocked full of toys, arts and crafts and video games. Children are able to create, play and explore throughout their hospital stay. All of our play areas are “safe areas” where no medical tests or procedures are performed.
Pediatrics offers a Pet Therapy Program every week to help decrease children and families stress and anxieties during hospitalization. Not only do the children love when they come to visit, but families and staff share in the fun as well.
All essential care is provided in a special treatment room equipped with all the medical supplies needed for your child’s care. Our treatment room is also equipped with a TV, I-spy light- up ceiling tile, and toys/activities to help distract children during medical procedures. To help children feel safe and associate their hospital room as a “safe Place”, no medical procedures are performed in the room.
At Sarasota Memorial, we do not consider parents visitors, but rather active partners on their child's care team. We encourage parents and guardians to stay overnight with their children. We offer families the chance to relax and take a break in our Family Lounge which offers a TV, dining area, fridge to keep food, and a microwave. We offer special menu items to appeal to children’s tastes, and complimentary meals for breastfeeding moms. Our relaxed visiting hours allow grandparents and special friends to visit when it's convenient or helpful for you and your child.
Safe & Secure Environment
Our Pediatric Unit is a locked unit which offers a secure environment with restricted access to ensure the safety of your child. All guardians receive a blue bracelet for throughout your child’s hospital stay, and visitors receive a visitor badge that they wear during their visit.
