Improving Your Working Memory Printer Friendly Version Printer Friendly Version Share

Working memory is an important driving quality that enables you to follow driving directions, rules, and regulations. It also assists you in making good decisions while behind the wheel.

Suggestions for improving mild working memory impairment are:

  • Avoid distractions; these may interfere with your ability to recall directions or remember the “rules of the road”
  • If possible, bring a travel companion along whom you find to be attentive to traffic conditions but not a distraction
  • Adjust when, where and how often you drive
  • Attempt to drive during the day and avoid driving at night
  • Avoid driving in congested areas and during busy times of the day
  • Plan your route and drive in familiar areas
  • Do not drive when fatigued
  • Follow-up with your primary care physician or an occupational therapist to decide on a course of action to keep you driving safely
  • You may also want to explore alternate transportation services in your community or ask a friend or family member if they would be willing to drive you in the event that you are no longer comfortable (it is always better to be prepared!)
