Sarasota Memorial Hospital has earned the prestigious Magnet Nursing Services Recognition from the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) in 2003 and re-designated in 2008. Awarded by the foremost authority on nursing, this national designation is the highest level of recognition that can be given to nursing organizations in health care. Only 371 hospitals in the United States - about 5 percent - share this coveted honor.

Research indicates that Magnet-designated facilities outperform their peers in recruiting and retaining nurses. (In fact, the term "Magnet" is used for successful nursing services because they are like magnets in attracting highly skilled nurses.) Studies also show that Magnet hospitals have reduced mortality and morbidity rates, increased patient satisfaction, reduced needle stick injuries or improved nurse-to-patient ratios.
