Secondary Stroke Prevention
To help prevent secondary strokes, Sarasota Memorial now has an outpatient clinic to provide patients who have had a stroke or TIA education and follow-up care to help prevent a second attack.

Among other services, the clinic provides resources, therapies and support to help patients control hypertension, manage stress and cholesterol levels, stop smoking, make recommended dietary or lifestyle changes and monitor medications they may need, such as blood thinners, to lower their risk of stroke.

Anticoagulation Clinic Opening Soon in Venice
This month, Sarasota Memorial Health Care System is slated to open a new outpatient clinic in Venice to help residents in surrounding communities safely manage their anticoagulation medications and decrease their risk of developing dangerous bleeding or blood clots.

Doctors typically prescribe anticoagulation medication, including Coumadin, Jantoven, Warfarin and low molecular weight Heparin, to reduce the risk of dangerous blood clots in people who have had heart attacks, strokes or other blood clotting conditions. But it can be a delicate balancing act: taking too much increases bleeding, while taking too little increases the risk of potentially deadly blood clots.

The Venice clinic will open Thursdays starting Aug. 14 in the Sarasota Memorial Health Care and Urgent Care Center at Venice, 997 N. US 41 Bypass. The health system operates five other anticoagulation clinics at medical campuses it operates throughout Manatee and Sarasota counties.
