New reports of deaths and infections from the antibiotic-resistant bacteria MRSA have some communities taking extreme measures, such as closing schools for heavy cleaning and disinfection. By raising public awareness, health officials hope adults and children pay better attention to a few simple personal hygiene rules, like hand washing, and precautionary measures, like getting a flu shot, to help fight the spread of these bugs. To learn more about MRSA and small steps you can take to safeguard your family, visit smh.com, Public Health In the News-MRSA.

Influenza season is upon us! Sarasota Memorial encourages everyone at high risk, especially those with asthma or other lung disease, to get vaccinated against the flu. If you display symptoms of the flu, such as fever, chills, loss of appetite, and body aches, we recommend you see your physician as soon as possible or visit one of Sarasota Memorial’s Walk-In Medical Centers. Medications, if taken at the onset of flu, are available to shorten its course. To help prevent spreading the flu virus, wash your hands often and stay home if you’re sick so as not to infect others. Sarasota Memorial is hosting flu clinics throughout the community in November (while supplies last). For days, times and locations and questions, call 941-917-7777.

Andrew Friedel, 77, of Englewood escaped death more times than he cares to count. Because of his family’s genetic predisposition to weak arteries, he has five stents keeping blood flowing to his heart, one to his kidney and had to undergo major surgery for an aortic aneurysm in his abdomen. Until last week, he thought the artery ballooning in his chest would be the one to kill him. Doctors said traditional surgery would likely paralyze him, but left untreated he had less than a 50/50 chance of living another year. That all changed on Oct. 24, when he became the first patient at Sarasota Memorial to undergo a thoracic stent graft, a minimally invasive alternative to open surgery. Less than 5 percent of hospitals across the country have the specialists, training and tools necessary to offer the advanced procedure. Learn more about this deadly condition and new option for treatment at smh.com.

No one knows better than nurses what sets a great hospital apart. That’s why we were particularly proud when a recent statewide survey of Florida nurses selected Sarasota Memorial as one of the top 3 hospitals in the state. ADVANCE for Nurses news magazine asked nurses to rate hospitals in five categories: quality of care, organizational culture, professional development, communication and retention efforts. Sarasota Memorial scored top honors in all five categories, earning us a spot on the Reader’s Choice Honor Roll. But be assured, we won’t rest on our laurels. We want all those for whom we care to know how deeply committed we are to continuing the hard work that earned us this honor. Learn more about career opportunities at smh.com.
