Healthplex Fitness Center

Proper breathing is an essential component of the foundation for preventative health. A quick, simple check to see if you are a shallow breather is to observe your own breath. If, as you naturally inhale, your abdomen pushes outward in the first two-thirds and your chest raises in the final third of your inhalation, then you are probably not a shallow breather. Practicing deep breathing, good posture, strength training, and yoga are great ways to improve your health.

Join us at Sarasota Memorial's Healthplex to learn about personally tailored training programs available to you. We invite you to schedule a private tour of the Healthplex fitness center and discover Sarasota’s regional medical fitness center extraordinaire! Visit Sarasotahealthplex.com or call 941-917-7000 for more information.

Real Help, Real Hope for People with Seizure Disorders.
Studies indicate half of all people who think they have epilepsy suffer from other misdiagnosed, often treatable conditions. At the Epilepsy Center of Sarasota Memorial – the region's first treatment center dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of seizure disorders – people whose seizures cannot be managed with current medical therapy now have access to state-of-the-art diagnostic and imaging technology that allows doctors to identify their specific type of seizures, quantify the frequency and duration of the seizures and test the effectiveness of medication or other therapies. With a physician referral, people can be admitted to the hospital’s specialized epilepsy unit for a few days – or a few hours a day on an outpatient basis – for definitive testing or to enroll in a clinical trial. Most insurance plans are accepted. For more information or a physician referral, contact HealthLine (941) 917-7777.

Epilepsy Support Groups are held the third Tuesday of each month, 12:30-1:30 p.m. at Sarasota Memorial's Institute for Advanced Medicine. (1/2 mile west of I-75 off Clark Road). Click here for more information: Community Health Calendar at smh.com

Gynecologic Cancer Foundation Introduces New Guidelines for Symptoms
September is both Gynecologic Cancer Awareness Month and Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month. To mark the occasion this year, Sarasota Memorial is joining with the Gynecologic Cancer Foundation (GCF) to educate women about the symptoms of ovarian cancer. Fatigue, indigestion, back pain, pain during intercourse, constipation, and menstrual irregularities are symptoms commonly reported by women with ovarian cancer, but because they are also common in women without the disease, they are not as useful in making an early diagnosis. Sarasota Memorial offers the only genetic cancer-screening program in Sarasota County. It provides the most current research about ovarian cancer, as well as breast and colon cancer and guidelines for their screening and treatment. For more information call (941) 917-7777.
