Sarasota Memorial is participating in an international, multi-center trial to explore a new, minimally-invasive treatment for those suffering with advanced widespread emphysema. The EASE (Exhale Airway Stents for Emphysema) Trial focuses on a procedure called airway bypass that involves creating pathways in the lung for trapped air to escape and in turn, relieve emphysema symptoms, including shortness of breath. If you or someone you know over the age of 35 has been diagnosed with advanced widespread emphysema and no longer smokes (or would be willing to stop smoking at least two months prior to enrollment in the study), you may qualify to participate in this study. For more information, please call (866) 431-3273 or visit www.EASEtrialUS.com.

The kids are out of school, adults are on vacation and there's more time for outdoor activities like swimming in the Gulf, sunbathing and backyard barbecues. But the very things that make summer so relaxing also make it a prime time of year for certain - and sometimes - life-threatening injuries. Should an emergency strike, be sure to call 911. But for sore throats, rashes and earaches or minor emergencies like sprains fractures and burns, Sarasota Memorial Walk-In Medical Centers' nationally ranked emergency, internal medicine and family physicians provide quick, comprehensive medical care to meet your family's urgent health needs. Most insurance plans accepted. No appointments necessary. Two convenient locations: 2401 University Parkway (917-1234) and 6130 S. Tamiami Trail (917-5678), Monday-Saturday, 8 a.m.-8 p.m.

At nearly 300 pounds, life for Allison Johnson wasn’t only about more food. It was also about pills for high blood pressure and high cholesterol. Nights spent hooked up to a machine for sleep apnea. And days worried about the example she was setting for her family and the kids who look up to her at the Tabernacle Christian School where she works. She’d tried diets, but whatever she lost, she regained. And then some. Finally her doctor sent her to Sarasota Memorial for gastric bypass surgery. Learn what a difference it made in her life and how her life lessons are helping in the fight against childhood obesity. Visit www.smh.com/weightlossprogram/ .
