Do you have a question about
health & fitness?
Ask a Healthplex Expert:

Sarasota Memorial's
Healthplex Fitness Center

We all talk about “getting fit”, but do you know what type of fitness you want to achieve?

Aerobic fitness. Aerobic activities condition your heart and lungs. The purpose of aerobic conditioning is to increase the amount of oxygen that is delivered to your muscles, which allows them to work longer. Any activity that raises your heart rate and keeps it up for an extended period of time will improve your aerobic conditioning. Muscle strengthening. Stronger muscles can mean either more powerful muscles that can do bigger jobs (such as lifting heavier weights) or muscles that will work longer before becoming exhausted (endurance). Weight training (resistance training) or simple exercises such as push-ups are two examples of ways to focus on muscle strengthening.
Flexibility. Like aerobic fitness and muscle strengthening, flexibility is a result of physical activity. Flexibility comes from stretching and group classes like yoga.

Healthplex fitness experts recommend: Achieving a balance between the three is important because each contributes to total fitness.

Visit Sarasotahealthplex.com or call 941-917-7000 for more information on programs to fit your needs.

Assessing Your Genetic Risk – Hereditary Breast, Ovarian and Colon Cancer
Sarasota Memorial’s Genetic Education Program is committed to providing people with the most current research about hereditary breast, ovarian and colon cancer and guidelines for screening and treatment. Our specially trained staff work one-on-one with patients – under the medical direction of James Fiorica, MD, head of Sarasota Memorial’s Women’s Cancer Specialty Program – to review their concerns about cancer history in their family, provide personal and family risk assessments and offer follow-up consultations to discuss genetic testing options and implications of test results. Although a physician referral is not required to participate in our genetic counseling program, patients should know that their insurance company may require a referral in order to cover our services. Sarasota Memorial’s Institute for Cancer Care, accredited by the American College of Surgeons's Commision on cancer, offers the only cancer genetic screening program in Sarasota County. For more information call Sarasota Memorial’s Genetic Education Program at 941-917-2005 or visit smh.com, Gynecologic Oncology Program.

Memorial Magnetism!
Since 2003, Sarasota Memorial has been designated a Magnet hospital, the nation's highest honor for excellence in nursing. SMHCS is among a select group of health care organizations - only 275 of the more than 4,000 hospitals in the U.S. - that have this distinction. Given by the American Nurses' Credentialing Center, the premier authority on nursing, Magnet recognition means that Sarasota Memorial provides a supportive environment that attracts and retains the best and brightest caregivers. To be recognized as a Magnet hospital, applicants must pass a rigorous review and meet criteria indicating superiority in all aspects of nursing services. The hospital is currently the only provider in the region with this special status. Every four years, Magnet hospitals must apply to be "re-designated." Please see the SMH Magnet Public Notice to learn more about Sarasota Memorial's re-designation effort and how you may participate.

Sarasota Memorial receives American Stroke Association's Get With The Guidelines SM Stroke Silver Performance Achievement Award
The award recognizes Sarasota Memorial’s commitment and success in implementing a higher standard of stroke care by ensuring stroke patients receive treatment according to nationally accepted standards and recommendations. Sarasota Memorial has developed a comprehensive system for rapid diagnosis and treatment of stroke patients admitted to the emergency room. This includes always being equipped to provide brain imaging scans, having neurologists available to conduct patient evaluations and using clot-busting medications when appropriate. “With stroke, time lost is brain lost, and the GWTG SM - Stroke Silver Perfomance Achievement Award addresses the important element of time,” said Mauricio Concha, MD, a stroke neurologist and medical director of Sarasota Memorial’s Stroke Program.
