Manager, Childbirth Education & Lactation Services Mary O’Connor, MSN, RNC, IBCLC, has been a member of Sarasota Memorial’s Women’s & Children’s Services team since 2000.
Internationally Board Certified as a Lactation Consultant (IBCLC), Mary also has certification in Neonatal Nursing, Neonatal Resuscitation and Advanced Cardiac Life Support. She received a master’s degree in Nursing – Nursing Education from Florida State University, a bachelor’s degree in Biology from New College and a bachelor’s degree in Nursing from the University of South Florida.
Mary worked as a Registered Nurse in the hospital’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, Mother-Baby Unit, Newborn Nursery, Lactation Services & Childbirth Education.
MBU Discharge Facilitator & Lactation Support/Discharge Instructor Sheera Thomas, RN, C-Efm, CBC, CCE has been a Labor & Delivery nurse at Sarasota Memorial Hospital for more than 7 years.
Sheera started teaching lactation to homeless women in NYC at 18 years old, as a volunteer, while attending nursing school. She is certified in Breastfeeding, Childbirth Education, External fetal monitoring, Neonatal Resuscitation and Advanced Cardiac Life Support. Sheera grew up in New York and spent many years as a travel nurse living and working throughout the US and Caribbean before settling in Sarasota with her husband and their 4 children.
Mary and Sheera are members of a dedicated team of lactation experts who provide one-on-one breastfeeding consultations with expectant and new mothers during their hospital stay and follow-up care to new moms at home.
