Making a difference in Sarasota health care is what an Auxiliary Volunteer strives to accomplish.  The Auxiliary uses every minute that a Volunteer offers towards a worthy goal.

What a better way to have a pleasant time, share smiles and laughs, defeat boredom, or simply give your time to a worthy cause than by Volunteering with US.  A few hours of your time can make a big difference to Hospital patients, their families, their visitors, and Hospital Staff.  It is a great way to serve our community and foster local pride.


Who Are We
The Sarasota Memorial Hospital Auxiliary has over 400 members that provide various programs and services to Sarasota Memorial Hospital.  The Auxiliary membership is a diverse group of individuals consisting of a mixture of gender, ages, occupations, interests, and backgrounds. But these individuals are linked by a common cause to serve those in need and make a difference in their lives.

What We Do
The Auxiliary serves patients, their families, their visitors, and Hospital Staff in a caring and courteous manner to enhance patient care and support Hospital growth and expansion.  The Auxiliary also provides funding to a scholarship program to support healthcare in Sarasota County.

What We Need

Volunteering with us can make a difference in your life and in the lives of those you serve.  The Auxiliary offers a wide variety of Volunteer opportunities so there is sure to be a service area that will fit your interests and schedule. This support allows the hospital staff to focus on the delivery of excellent medical care and wellness to the Hospital patient. The Hospital Volunteer Services Staff provides the education and coordination of the Volunteer programs. Auxiliary History
The Auxiliary is a volunteer led organization working hand-in-hand with the Sarasota Memorial Hospital through its Director of Volunteer Services.  The Auxiliary began services in 1946 and was formalized into the Women’s Auxiliary of Sarasota Hospital in 1947 and was incorporated in 1948.  The name of the Auxiliary was changed to Sarasota Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, Inc. in 1995. Several of our volunteers have been active with the Auxiliary for 20 years or more and have logged more than 15,000 service hours.

Donate to the Auxiliary
The Sarasota Memorial Hospital Auxiliary Inc. is designated as a 501-C-3 organization by the Internal Revenue Service.   That designation allows the Auxiliary to accept contributions from third parties that can be for a designated purpose or can be unconditional. To solicit donations the Auxiliary had to acquire a permit from the State of Florida.

The Auxiliary raises money for its scholarship program as well as other programs by a variety of sales events Hospital employees and the public.  The primary use of funds by the Auxiliary is for funding scholarship programs for high school seniors who want to pursue a college education in a human health care field.  The seniors complete an application to ensure they meet the competitive criteria for an award. 

Historically, the Auxiliary had revenues at a level that allowed for up to 10 scholarships a year.  Recently, the revenues have been reduced by economic events and have only provided funding for 4-5 scholarship awards.   To aid in the fundraising effort, we have prepared a profile for listing on The Giving Partner website to allow us to participate in the giving challenge sponsored by the Community Foundation of Sarasota. You can donate funds by writing a check and mailing it to the Auxiliary office.  But the best way is to use the “giving challenge” in September when donations can be matched by a private foundation. All gifts are tax deductible since the Auxiliary is a 501-C-3 organization.  We are grateful for the support we receive from the Hospital Staff and the community. The Board Members are Auxiliary Volunteers who work in various services areas in addition to providing leadership for the Auxiliary. The Board Members receive no monetary remuneration for their roles as Volunteers and as Board Members. The President term of office is for two years. The remaining officers have annual terms of service. Board Members are elected at the Annual Meeting each September. The Board establishes standing committees on an as needed basis. These committees provide feedback and recommendations to the Auxiliary Board for evaluation and approval.
